Traders have welcomed the reopening of trade via the Nathu La Pass which falls on the ancient Silk Route and used to be an important hub of trade with Tibet in earlier times. NDTV was at Nathu La Pass which is situated at a height of above 14000 feet. The border trade through the Nathu La Pass remains officially open for about six months every year, from May to November. The resumption of trade will end a si year suspension that affected traders and border communities in the region, especially Sikkim.
The border trade via the Old Silk Route at Nathu La had initially reopened on July 06, 2006, amidst huge expectations of improving relations and trade between India and China. It was also expected to help in achieving economic prosperity in the areas surrounding the Nathu La Pass in both countries. While it was discontinued amidst the Covid pandemic, it reopened today with Sikkim’s Commerce and Industries Minister and Industry and Commerce Secretary Karma D Youtso visiting Nathu La Pass to oversee he reopening of trade.
