US Issues Fresh Travel Advisory The US Embassy in Jordan has issued a fresh security alert for American citizens, warning that the security situation in the Middle East remains volatile and urging those in the region to be prepared to leave if tensions escalate further. In the advisory issued on August 1, the embassy said the regional security environment remains “complex" with the potential for unforeseen escalation. It advised Americans in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance, prepare for flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions, and “consider departing, or be prepared to depart" if the situation worsens. Americans outside the region were urged to “seriously reconsider travel to and through the Middle East." The advisory comes amid a series of escalating developments across the region.
On Saturday, explosions were reported in Eslamabad Gharb in western Iran, although Iranian authorities had not confirmed the cause. Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that an unidentified projectile struck an oil tanker off the coast of Oman, causing minor damage to the vessel. The crew was reported safe, and the tanker continued its voyage. Iran has also signalled that it is preparing for a prolonged period of instability. First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said the government was stockpiling supplies for the next two years and planning for “the worst conditions", while stressing that maintaining public stability remained the government’s top priority. The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait discussed regional developments and stressed the importance of de-escalation, protecting freedom of navigation, and maintaining security across the region. In a separate statement, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi condemned what he described as Iranian attacks on civilian facilities in Kuwait and reaffirmed the bloc’s full support for Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US Embassy also warned that Iran and Iran-backed groups may target US interests overseas, including diplomatic facilities, businesses and institutions linked to the United States. It cautioned that attacks could occur without warning and noted that the absence of previous incidents in a country should not be considered a guarantee of safety. Referring specifically to Jordan, the embassy advised Americans to avoid travel to military bases and reminded them that Iran has previously targeted civilian infrastructure across the Middle East, including airports, hotels and other public locations. It also urged US citizens to avoid demonstrations, monitor local media, follow instructions from local authorities, confirm flight schedules directly with airlines, and enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.
