While comparing with former chief minister Nitish Kumar, Choudhary said the JD(U) leader set an example by vacating the Chief Minister’s residence the moment he stepped down from the post. “This is democracy, not monarchy. Government bungalows are not anyone’s personal property," Choudhary said while speaking at an event in Muzaffarpur on Tuesday.
“Some people keep saying ‘my house, my house’, but this is not a monarchy. In a democracy, rules and laws apply equally to everyone. The house will have to be vacated," he said. “It will definitely be vacated. No one can stop it. No one on earth can stop it." The Bihar Building Construction Department has allotted the bungalow at 10 Circular Road in Patna to Dairy and Fisheries Minister Nand Kishor Ram and directed Rabri Devi, currently the leader of opposition in the legislative council, to shift to another government residence at 39 Hardinge Road that was allotted to her in November last year. Officials have now issued a fresh notice asking her to vacate the premises within 15 days. However, Rabri Devi made it clear that she will not leave the bungalow voluntarily.
“If they want, they can send force to evict me, but I will not vacate it myself," she said. While not naming Rabri Devi’s family, the CM said: “The mother wants a separate house, the son wants a separate house, the daughter wants a separate house. How long can this arrangement continue? This cannot go on." “The day my party and leaders tell me my role is over, I will leave the government bungalow within 24 hours and move to my private house," he added. The bungalow at 10 Circular Road has been the residence of Rabri Devi and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav for nearly two decades and has served as a key political centre for the party. Located next to the chief minister’s residence, the address holds significant political importance in Bihar.
The BJP-led NDA government has accused the RJD leader of overstaying despite being allotted an alternative residence months ago. RJD leaders, on the other hand, have alleged political vendetta and said the move is aimed at targeting the Yadav family ahead of the assembly elections.
