A 14-kilometre-long crochet national flag was created at the Port Stadium in Akkayyapalem on Saturday, in an attempt to set a world record. Organised by Mahila Manovikas under “Project Tiranga”, the event, titled “Largest Crochet Bunting”, brought together over 40,000 hand-knitted woollen flags contributed by participants across India and from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai.
The flags, tied in 14 rows along iron poles encircling the stadium, took roughly 12 hours to assemble, beginning at 6 a.m. Organisers said the attempt sought to surpass the existing record of 11.78
kms. Madhavi Suribhatla, founder of Mahila Manovikas, said the initiative aimed to popularise crochet craft among younger generations and reflect national unity. As mothers, they wanted to encourage children to use woollen flags instead
of plastic ones and the flags will be distributed to the public after it is assembled, she said, adding that Guinness World Records officials were expected to verify the measurements and confirm the record on Sunday.
