Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar Shreeroopa has directed the officials to identify fake medical practitioners operating in the district and initiate action against them under the provisions of Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act. Chairing a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office recently to review the implementation of the KPME Act and the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) programme under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, she said strict action must be taken against unqualified persons running clinics without the required educational qualifications.
She said six clinics that had earlier been issued notices, closed and sealed under the rules had been fined ₹50,000 each under Section 15(1) of the KPME Act. However, only three clinics had paid the penalty. The remaining three fake practitioners should be served fresh notices directing them to pay the fine. “If they fail to do so, FIRs should be registered against them,” she instructed. The Deputy Commissioner also said several oral complaints had been received regarding excessive treatment charges being levied by private hospitals in the district.
She directed officials to conduct periodic inspections to verify such complaints. With regard to the PCPNDT programme, Ms. Shreeroopa instructed officials to ensure that no illegal activities were carried out at scanning centres. Inspection and monitoring teams should conduct regular visits to these centres. She also directed officials to ensure that no scanning centre operates in the district without registration under the PCPNDT Act. If any unauthorised scanning centres are found, legal action should be initiated in accordance with the law, she told the District Health and Family Welfare Officer, who is the Member Secretary of the PCPNDT Appropriate Authority.
Additional Deputy Commissioner T. Javaregowda, Additional Superintendent of Police M.N. Shashidhar, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Rajesh Kumar, District Family Welfare Officer Ankappa, District Leprosy Eradication Officer Chandrashekhar, Taluk Health Officer Srinivas and other officials were present at the meeting.
