Why is WhatsApp asking for users' age? Even though the reason behind the latest prompt in India remains unclear, WhatsApp asking users for their age is not entirely new. On its official support page, the company explains that it may ask users to provide or confirm their age when they register or use certain features. In some cases, it may also request additional information to verify a user's age. According to WhatsApp, collecting age information helps it comply with legal obligations in different parts of the world. The company says this information also enables it to offer age-appropriate experiences, including certain Meta AI features on WhatsApp and shown in Status and Channels where applicable. The company adds that age information may be used to enforce its Terms of Service, improve its services, provide customer support, respond to legal requests, promote safety and security, and better manage users' privacy settings.
WhatsApp also stresses that the age provided by users is not visible to other people on the platform. Once a user turns 18, or reaches the age of majority in their country, the account is treated like any other adult account, with access to all available features. Could India bring age verification rules? The latest reports have naturally raised questions about whether India could follow other countries that have introduced stricter rules for younger internet users. Australia, for example, has passed a law that bans children under the age of 16 from using several major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X, Reddit and YouTube. The Australian government said the move was aimed at reducing children's exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying and online grooming. Interestingly, WhatsApp is exempt from Australia's under-16 social media ban and continues to operate under its standard global age guidelines.
