From Kovilpatti to the Commonwealth podium: Raja Muthupandi’s silver triumph

Raja Muthupandi, the 26-year-old weightlifter who clinched a silver medal in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, has emerged as a symbol of perseverance, overcoming financial hardships to shine on the international stage. Hailing from Sankaralingapuram in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu, Mr. Raja is the son of a truck loader, Muthupandi, and a matchbox industry labourer, Pechiammal. Despite growing up in a family with limited financial means, he never let difficulties stand in the way of his sporting ambitions. The 2026 Games marked Mr. Raja’s second appearance at the event, having first represented India in 2018. His latest achievements are a culmination of years of sacrifice by him and his entire family. Although Mr. Raja secured employment with the Integral Coach Factory in 2019, the family’s situation has remained modest.
His family members says he has not received any sponsorship and that they continue to bear the expenses of his training and other necessities. His mother is overjoyed by his son’s achievement. “I had a hysterectomy when Raja was around one-and-a-half years old. However, to this day, I continue to work in the matchbox industry for ₹270 a day, doing eight-hour shifts, so that my children can achieve their goal,” she says. She has been on leave for the past couple of months due to her medical condition and describes Mr. Raja’s Commonwealth Games silver as the reward for years of relentless struggle and sacrifice. Recalling the difficult choices the family has had to make, Ms. Pechiammal says, “Both my sons, Raja and Suresh, took up weightlifting from a young age.
But our financial situation allowed us to support only one of them. Raja continued to pursue sport, while Suresh sacrificed his own dream.” Raja’s elder brother Suresh Kumar was also a promising weightlifter who competed at the junior national level in 2016 and secured a bronze in the 67-kg State-level men’s category in 2022. However, he eventually stepped away from the sport and is now preparing for Group IV competitive examination. “We understood our family’s financial situation. Weightlifting requires significant investment in training, nutrition, and competitions. So, I gave up and focused on my career options,” he says. According to him, Mr. Raja’s ultimate goal is to win a medal at the 2028 Olympic Games.
“The State government’s cash reward of ₹30 lakh will be a huge support. It will help meet the financial requirements for his preparation for the Olympics,” he points out. Suresh adds that the entire family is overwhelmed with joy over Mr. Raja’s win. “He has reached this stage purely through his dedication and hard work. Despite battling injuries, he never gave up, and, today, he has made all our sacrifices worthwhile.”
