Dehradun Police on Saturday arrested the husband Saurabh Khatri and Sister-in-law Charu Khatri of government school lecturer Srishti Kandari, whose death within eight months of her marriage has sparked widespread attention across Uttarakhand. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Dobhal said the arrests were made after investigators gathered crucial evidence during the probe. Addressing the media, Dobhal said police teams led by the SP Rural and the Circle Officer launched a swift investigation immediately after the incident. “Taking swift action, the team of SP Rural and the Circle Officer collected all important evidence and arrested two people her husband and her sister-in-law.

Strict police action will be taken against all the accused," the SSP said. Police said the investigation is still underway and assured that stringent legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in the case. Death Within Eight Months of Marriage Thirty-year-old Srishti Kandari, a government school lecturer from Srinagar Garhwal, was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Harrawala under Dehradun’s Doiwala area on July 29, less than eight months after marrying Saurabh Khatri, a government employee, in November last year. Based on a complaint filed by her mother, Seema Kandari, Doiwala Police registered a case under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The family has alleged that Srishti was subjected to mental and physical harassment over dowry and other issues, accusations that are being investigated by police. Women’s Commission Steps In Meanwhile, Uttarakhand State Commission for Women Chairperson Kusum Kandwal said the Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the case.

Kandwal said she immediately spoke with Srishti’s mother as well as senior police officials, including the Circle Officer, the Station House Officer (SHO) and the SSP, to ensure a thorough investigation. “This is very unfortunate. An educated daughter who was a teacher decided to die by suicide," she said. Appealing to women facing harassment or distress to seek help instead of taking extreme steps, Kandwal urged them to approach the Women’s Commission or the police. “To ensure that such incidents do not recur, I urge daughters to approach the Women’s Commission if you feel any wrong is happening to you. The doors of the Commission are always open for you. Approach the police. You will get justice. But don’t take such a drastic step," she said, adding that strict action would be taken against those found guilty. CB-CID Probe Ordered The case has also prompted action from the Uttarakhand government.
