(AFP/File) Iran has threatened to target key energy infrastructure across the region if it faces any new military action from the United States or Israel, following signals from Washington that President Donald Trump is weighing the possibility of expanding operations against Tehran. A senior Iranian security official, quoted by the state-affiliated Tasnim News Agency, described reports of potential US and Israeli strikes on Iranian infrastructure as “a kind of madness".
The official said Tehran had already prepared “extensive response plans" and warned that any attack would be met with strikes on critical infrastructure in Israel as well as US energy assets in the region. According to the report, Iranian armed forces possess both “the capability and the will" to carry out such operations. The remarks came shortly after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Iran of breaching last month’s ceasefire agreement and intensifying hostilities. “President Trump is not going to stand by and allow this terrorist behaviour to occur," Leavitt said. “Iran will continue to pay until they come to the table in what President Trump deems a meaningful way." President Trump also suggested on Friday that military action against Iran remained a possibility.
Speaking to reporters at Camp David, he said: “We just want to win" in Iran. He added, “We’ll be hitting them very hard. You know, at some point they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore.'" The sharp exchange unfolded amid another day of heightened tensions in the Gulf region. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for striking two oil tankers that were attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Iranian state media further reported that four additional tankers had reversed course and turned back. Separately, Kuwait said it had intercepted Iranian drones that entered its airspace while targeting military facilities hosting US troops. The country’s defence ministry said debris from the drones caused material damage, though no casualties were reported.
