Recent scientific findings suggest that gum disease can impact overall health beyond oral hygiene. Harmful bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream, causing systemic inflammation linked to heart conditions, diabetes, respiratory issues, and pregnancy complications like premature delivery. Dr Parthasarathi Reddy, Managing Director at FMS Dental Hospital, explains that while direct causation is still being researched, there is a clear proven association between periodontitis, elevated inflammatory markers, and heart diseases.
He notes that mouth breathing can alter jaw growth and affect gum tissue, though it does not directly alter teeth formation. Regarding oral care tools, manual toothbrushes are as effective as electric ones if proper technique, time, and strokes are maintained. Additionally, psychological stress indirectly damages teeth by triggering parafunctional habits like clenching and bruxism during sleep, leading to tooth wear. Treating gum disease controls bacterial infection and stops systemic inflammation, highlighting the necessity of brushing twice daily, flossing, regular checkups, and addressing symptoms like bleeding gums or bad breath.
