Heavy rain lashed different parts of Ernakulam district on Saturday (August 1, 2026) morning, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advisories. While incessant rain persisted across the district on Friday (July 31, 2026) night, the city felt some respite in the morning. However, the eastern region of the district, mainly Kothamangalam and nearby areas, continued to receive rain in the morning, reportedly inundating a few houses and isolating certain areas.
Read updates from the Kerala rains on August 1, 2026 District Disaster Management Authority has advised those staying along the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers to stay safe as water level in both the rivers have surpassed the dangerous mark. In Kothamangalam area, Pooyamkutty, a tributary of the Periyar, was in spate. Manikandanchal bridge across the river was submerged.
Tribal hamlets including Uriyappetti, Vellaramkuthu, Vaari, Kunjippara and Thalavachapara were isolated after a traditional ferry service across the Pooyamkutty river was disrupted. A few houses and roads were inundated in Urulanthanni, a forest area in Kuttampuzha garama panchayat. The compound wall of an anganwadi collapsed amid the heavy rain. However, nobody was injured.
All tourist spots operated by the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council have been closed for the day in view of the orange alert issued in the district, authorities said.
