Tharanga grew up playing cricket and was clocked bowling in the region of mid-130 kph during his teenage years. India superstar Neeraj who clinched the silver medal on his return to CWG with a throw of 85.83m, had spoken highly of Tharanga following the qualification round in Glasgow. “He’s a good boy. He’s a friend of mine. This year he really threw well. It’s good he’s doing something great for Sri Lanka," Neeraj said. Meanwhile, it was a historic day for Indian contingent in the javelin throw as both Neeraj and Yashvir Singh secured podium finishes. Yashvir stunned everyone with a personal best throw of 85.41m to take bronze medal.
