Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain on Friday, saying the temporary measure had become necessary after thousands of migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco. Italy Imposes One-Month Border Checks “The temporary suspension of #Schengen with Spain is a necessary choice to safeguard the security of our citizens and defend the European borders," Tajani said in a post on X. The Italian foreign minister said the step was allowed under EU treaties and had become “unavoidable" due to the migrant crisis in Ceuta.
The suspension will remain in force for one month from Saturday, Italy’s interior ministry said.
