As many as 150 relief camps are being set up along the banks of river Godavari and Sabari on the Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh-Telangana tri-State junction as the two rivers are in spate following the issuance of the second Godavari flood warning issued at Bhadrachalam on Friday. The relief camps will accommodate people likely affected by the flooding in 189 villages in Polavaram district, as majority of them fall within the submergence area of the Polavaram irrigation project.
Polavaram District Collector K. Dinesh Kumar announced that at least 32 boats have been arranged to evacuate affected people and transport essential commodities to the relief camps. “The floodwater downstream of Bhadrachalam is expected to reach the upstream Polavaram irrigation project by Saturday, submerging villages located along the banks of the Sabari and Godavari rivers in Polavaram district.
The NDRF and SDRF personnel have been deployed in Chintoor and K.R. Puram, where the Sabari rivers joins the Godavari,” said Mr. Dinesh Kumar. At Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district, the Irrigation Department officials are releasing 11,000 cusecs of floodwater into the Godavari delta. However, more than 5.2 lakh cusecs of floodwater is being let into the sea from Dowleswaram.
Meanwhile, all the tourism spots have been closed and visitors have been advised to postpone their schedules. Boating operations in the river Godavari and Papikonda hills have also been suspended.
