The incident prompted Spain to deploy military personnel to its North African enclave of Ceuta as thousands of migrants overwhelmed border security by swimming across the sea, walking along the coastline and breaching border barriers. The authenticity of some of the viral videos has not been independently verified. Authorities said several bodies were recovered from the water during the crossing. The Spanish government said the Armed Forces had been deployed to assist the Civil Guard after local authorities sought urgent reinforcements to deal with the unprecedented influx.

Several other videos shared online showed crowds of mostly young men moving through Ceuta after crossing the border. Women and children were also seen among those arriving. Security Tightened After Fresh Influx To reinforce security, Spain sent around 200 specialised police officers and 60 soldiers from the mainland to Ceuta. The latest crisis has revived memories of the 2021 migration surge, when nearly 10,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco over a span of a few days. Ceuta and Melilla have long remained flashpoints in migration between Europe and North Africa, with thousands attempting dangerous crossings every year in search of entry into the European Union.
