(News18 Marathi) In a serious food safety scare at the Municipal Corporation’s Pantnagar Upper Primary Hindi School in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, a glass shard was allegedly found in a mid-day meal served to students. The incident has triggered concern among parents and teachers, reigniting questions over food quality and student safety in civic-run schools. According to school authorities, the incident came to light when a student reportedly found a piece of glass in the meal during distribution.

Teachers immediately halted the serving of food after realising that a glass fragment had entered the child’s mouth. No serious injury was reported, but the incident has raised alarm over alleged lapses in quality control. Mumbai Mayor and Leader of the Opposition in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Kishori Pednekar, visited the school and strongly criticised the civic administration over the incident. Questioning accountability, Pednekar asked, “Who would have been responsible if the glass had become lodged in a child’s throat or stomach?" She accused the administration of compromising the safety of schoolchildren. Pednekar also spoke to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe from the school premises, urging an immediate investigation into the incident and demanding strict action against the food supplier as well as officials found responsible. She further questioned the alleged serving of soya chunks in the meal despite claims that they had been barred from the menu.

Targeting the administration, Pednekar sought an explanation for how the ingredient was included and alleged that the teacher who highlighted the incident was facing harassment. Vikas Ghuge, a teacher at the school and an office-bearer of the Prahar Teachers’ Association, said complaints regarding the quality of the mid-day meals had been raised on several occasions in the past, but no corrective action had been taken. He said the food had been distributed only after the routine quality and taste checks, following which the glass fragments were discovered. The incident has prompted fresh calls for stricter monitoring of mid-day meal preparation and distribution in Mumbai’s municipal schools. Authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement on the matter.
