Amid the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, farmers from the ayacut area of the Kabini irrigation project in Mysuru district have urged the State government to release water into the Kabini canal from Saturday, citing acute hardship caused by the prolonged dry spell.
At a meeting held in T. Narasipura on Friday, farmers said those in the Kabini ayacut were facing severe distress as tanks had dried up, leaving inadequate drinking water and fodder for livestock. The farmers also demanded that representatives of Cauvery basin farmers be invited to the State government’s proposed all-party meeting on the Cauvery water-sharing issue.
Federation of State Farmers’ Organisations president Kurubur Shanthakumar said convening a meeting with only political party leaders would not help resolve the issue. “Farmer leaders from the Cauvery basin have first-hand knowledge of the ground realities and should be invited to participate in the discussions,” he said.
He argued that restricting the meeting to political parties would only politicise the issue and urged the government to seek the views of farmer leaders from the ayacut areas before taking any decision.
