In a bid to improve the quality of white-topping works, Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to conduct a pilot using geotextile sheets or curing blankets instead of conventional gunny bags for curing concrete over a 100-metre stretch and assess their effectiveness. The direction was issued during an inspection of ongoing white-topping works under the Bengaluru North City Corporation on Friday. Rao stressed that there should be no compromise on quality and that all projects must be completed within the stipulated timeframe. He inspected works at Amruthahalli Main Road, Jakkur Railway Overbridge (ROB), Jakkur Road (Raitha Santhe Road), Allalasandra Road, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Road, and 20th Cross in Sahakaranagar.
On Amruthahalli Main Road, where an 800-metre white-topping project is under way, with 400 metres already completed, Mr. Rao directed officials to begin footpath works immediately and execute them simultaneously with the remaining road works. He also instructed officials to ensure an adequate turning radius at junctions for smooth vehicular movement and install CCTV cameras on all project roads for monitoring. Rao directed officials to write to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) regarding the asphalting of Arkavathi Road. After noticing a building allegedly encroaching on a footpath, he directed officials to inspect the site, issue a notice to the owner, and remove the encroachment.
On Jakkur Road (Raitha Santhe), Mr. Rao directed officials to shift the existing overhead optical fibre cables into underground utility ducts within 15 days and asked them to coordinate with the Joint Commissioner on Transferable Development Rights (TDR) related to road widening. On Allalasandra Road, he instructed officials to use manual labour instead of machinery for excavation near underground utility lines to prevent cable damage and expedite the works. He also directed officials to clear the debris dumped along Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Road as part of the Freedom from Waste campaign on August 1 and install “Namma Bengaluru” and “I Love Bengaluru” signboards at vacant sites.
During the inspection of the Jakkur Railway Overbridge, he ordered non-destructive testing of the bridge and its structural components, sought verification of whether the crash barriers conform to Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines, and directed officials to conduct quality and compaction tests on the asphalt laid on the flyover ramps.
