Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar will inaugurate the debris clearance drive on Saturday under the ‘Tyajyadinda Swantantra’, or Freedom from Waste campaign launched by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). Shivakumar, along with Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, will launch the drive at Hebbal Junction on Ballari Road in north Bengaluru.
As part of the campaign, titled Just Clean Bengaluru, the five Bengaluru corporations will undertake the removal of only inert debris. According to GBA data, about 22,732 tonnes of debris has been identified within the GBA limits. However, the Minister on Thursday said that he estimates more than one lakh tonnes of waste has accumulated on the city’s streets.
The data shows that Bengaluru West City Corporation has the highest number of debris locations, with 420 sites containing 7,958 tonnes of debris. The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has identified several dumping grounds for the disposal of the waste. The campaign will continue for a month.
From August 15, the GBA will also begin clearing debris dumped on vacant sites and legacy waste accumulated at those locations. The cost of the clearance will be added to the property tax of the respective sites.
