Social Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar on Friday said the Sripada Yellampalli Reservoir reaching its full capacity due to heavy flood inflows has vindicated the long-term planning of previous Congress governments and exposed what he termed as the ‘false narrative’ propagated by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Addressing a press conference at the Congress Legislature Party office here, the Minister said the reservoir had reached its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) and the government was prepared to regulate water releases to downstream projects, including Mid Manair and Lower Manair reservoirs.
Laxman Kumar said the Sripada Yellampalli Project, designed during the tenure of late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was conceived with a scientifically planned gravity-based flood canal network to meet future irrigation needs. According to him, the current inflows demonstrated that water could reach the reservoir naturally without the need for lifting or pumping mechanisms. The Minister questioned earlier claims made by BRS leaders K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao regarding the necessity of operating motors at the Kannepalli pumphouse. Referring to protests staged by BRS leaders demanding activation of the pumps, he said the reservoir had now filled naturally, disproving their argument that pumping was essential for water inflows.
Criticising the BRS, Mr. Laxman Kumar alleged that the party had failed to play the role of a constructive opposition and appeared unwilling to acknowledge the benefits of abundant rainfall and improved irrigation prospects for farmers. He said the expansion of cultivation across northern Telangana and favourable conditions for paddy production reflected the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare and agricultural development. The Minister also highlighted Congress’ role in conceiving and executing major irrigation projects, including Nagarjunasagar, Srisailam, Sri Ram Sagar, Sriripada Yellampalli and Mid Manair.
In contrast, he alleged that the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project undertaken during the BRS regime had come under public scrutiny. Laxman Kumar urged the BRS leadership to respect the people’s mandate and function as a responsible opposition, stating that the Congress government remained committed to protecting public interests and strengthening irrigation infrastructure across Telangana.
