(File/AFP) Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India in September for the BRICS Summit, marking his first trip to the country since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and the subsequent military standoff between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The summit, which comes amid heightened global geopolitical and economic uncertainty, is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. India is hosting the event as the current chair of the BRICS grouping. Xi Jinping’s Last India Visit Xi Jinping’s last visit to India was in October 2019, when he travelled to Tamil Nadu for the second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram).
The two-day meeting, held on October 11-12, 2019, was aimed at strengthening strategic communication between the two countries and discussing broader issues concerning India-China relations. The Mamallapuram summit was the second informal meeting between PM Modi and Jinping after their first such interaction at Wuhan in China in April 2018. Unlike formal bilateral summits, the informal format was designed to allow the two leaders to hold extensive one-on-one discussions in a relaxed setting, without the constraints of a formal agenda. The Mamallapuram Summit During the 2019 summit, Prime Minister Modi and President Xi held discussions on a wide range of issues, including improving mutual understanding, enhancing economic cooperation, maintaining peace and stability along the India-China border, and strengthening people-to-people ties. The talks were held against the backdrop of complex ties between the two countries, with both sides seeking to manage differences while expanding areas of cooperation. The leaders reviewed developments in bilateral relations since the Wuhan summit and exchanged views on global and regional issues. Before Galwan Changed The Equation The historic coastal town of Mamallapuram was chosen as the venue for the summit due to its ancient links with China.
The discussions also highlighted historical maritime and cultural connections between the Tamil region and China. During the visit, Xi and PM Modi also held delegation-level talks, where both sides discussed measures to improve trade and economic cooperation. The leaders agreed that India and China should continue efforts to ensure a stable and balanced relationship. The summit came months after India decided to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 in August 2019, a move that had drawn criticism from China. However, the issue did not dominate the informal talks between the two leaders. The Mamallapuram meeting was followed by the third informal summit, which was expected to take place in China, but it did not materialise amid worsening ties between the two countries after the 2020 eastern Ladakh border clash.
