The Principal District and Sessions Court in Thoothukudi on Thursday (July 30, 2026), has dismissed the bail plea of Vilathikulam DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan, who is in judicial custody after being arrested in a case for allegedly making derogatory and intimidating remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The MLA was arrested by Thoothukudi District Branch Police on July 20, following a complaint lodged by Thoothukudi North District Secretary of TVK, Balasubramanian. A case was registered against him under three sections and he was remanded to judicial custody at the central prison in Palayamkottai on the same day.
His earlier bail petition was dismissed by the Thoothukudi Judicial Magistrate Court-I on July 22. Subsequently, Markandayan filed a fresh bail petition before the Principal District and Sessions court in Thoothukudi. When the matter came up for hearing before the Principal District Judge S. Subadevi, on Wednesday, the court sought certain clarification regarding the petition pending before the Madras High Court and adjourned the hearing to Thursday.
When the bail petition was taken up again on Thursday, the judge heard the arguments from both sides and dismissed the bail plea.
