The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for another five years, continuing it till the 2030-31 financial year. The decision comes with a total financial outlay of Rs 3,15,614 crore.
Announcing the Cabinet’s decision, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said PM-KISAN remains one of the flagship programmes of the Government of India, providing direct income support to farmers throughout the agricultural cycle. Under the scheme, eligible farmers receive Rs 6,000 annually, transferred in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 directly into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Vaishnaw said the financial assistance is aligned with the crop cycle, allowing farmers to purchase seeds, fertilisers and other agricultural inputs at the beginning of every sowing season.
The support is intended to help farmers meet cultivation expenses during key agricultural periods, including Kharif sowing, Kharif harvesting, preparation for the Rabi season and the ongoing harvesting period. He said the timely transfer of funds ensures that farmers have access to working capital when it is needed most, reducing dependence on informal borrowing and helping them manage seasonal agricultural expenses. The government said the continuation of the PM-KISAN scheme reflects its commitment to strengthening farmers’ incomes and providing sustained financial assistance through direct transfers.
