Amid ongoing relief efforts by the government, NGOs and volunteers, a young woman from Assam has sparked discussions after alleging that flood-affected families received torn, worn and barely wearable clothes, including used undergarments, as part of donated relief material.
“If You Wouldn’t Wear It Yourself, Please Don’t Donate It" The woman, named Dikshanita Phukan, shared her experience in a video on Instagram, where she expressed her disappointment over the condition of some of the clothes distributed to flood victims. In her post, she revealed that they received clothes that were old, damaged and unsuitable for anyone to wear in donated items and questioned the mindset of people who donate items they would never use themselves. “We take full responsibility for not being able to sort every donated item before distribution. In the rush of managing funds, shopping, packing, transport, and relief work, a few unsuitable clothes, including used undergarments and stained clothes, were unfortunately overlooked," she wrote in the caption. She continued, “The donated used clothes were only an additional form of support. Every family also received new clothes, along with essential relief materials. In total, we were able to provide relief, including new clothes, to over 500 flood-affected families." She added, “If you wouldn’t wear it yourself, please don’t donate it to someone who has already lost so much.
Relief is not just about giving—it’s about preserving dignity. Thank you to everyone who donated clean, wearable clothes with love and respect." “They’re Just Getting Rid Of Their Old Clothes" The incident soon caught the attention of people on the internet, with many condemning the donation of unusable clothing or used clothes and stressing that humanitarian aid should be given with empathy and respect. “This message is for those who engage in such behaviour: if you can’t donate, that’s completely your choice—no one is forcing you. Relief funds are about giving from the heart, not under pressure. Thankfully, you verified before donating. Otherwise, imagine the criticism and consequences that could have followed," wrote a user. Another said, “Basically, they are cleaning their wardrobes. No humanity. They are the same who don’t question the unfair situation, but they flex their so-called empathy." “They’re not donating, they’re just getting rid of their old filthy clothes, trust me," commented an individual. “It’s disgusting and shameful that those who donated such clothes are not under usable conditions.
