A 30-year-old Indian Army Major was killed, and two Lieutenant-rank officers were injured after their SUV hit a camel and overturned multiple times near the Jaisalmer Military Station in Rajasthan late on Thursday night. The deceased officer, Major Hamza Arif, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, had got married barely a month ago. He was driving the SUV when the accident occurred around six kilometres from the Jaisalmer district headquarters, near the War Museum, while the three officers were returning to the military station from the city.
Read Full Story According to police, the camel suddenly came onto the road, leaving the driver with little time to react. The SUV rammed into the animal, overturned around five times and skidded nearly 100 metres before coming to a halt. The camel also died on the spot. Army personnel and officers rushed to the scene after receiving information about the crash and rescued the three officers trapped inside the mangled vehicle. They were taken to the Army Military Hospital, where Major Arif succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The two injured officers, Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore and Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain, are undergoing treatment at the military hospital. Their condition has not been officially disclosed. Following the incident, local cop Jagdish Charan said the police reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. A dead camel was found lying by the roadside, while the black SUV bearing registration number GJ39CC1403 was found badly damaged near the Army boundary wall. Police said the vehicle lost control after colliding with the camel, resulting in the devastating rollover.
The body of Major Arif has been shifted to Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer for post-mortem examination. The accident has cast a pall of gloom over the Jaisalmer Military Station, where the officers were posted. The crash occurred at the same location where, nearly a year ago, a private bus caught fire, killing 29 passengers in one of Rajasthan's deadliest road tragedies. Ends
