'Utmost Brutality In Name Of Religion': Tahir Hussain, Others Sentenced To Life For Ankit Sharma's Murder Published By, Last Updated: July 31, 2026, 16:51 IST Ankit Sharma was murdered during the North East Delhi riots in February 2020 in the Dayal Pur area. His mutilated body was recovered from a drain. Karkardooma Court in Delhi pronounced the sentence A Delhi court on Friday sentenced Tahir Hussain and four other convicts to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi riots. He was murdered during the North East Delhi riots in February 2020 in the Dayal Pur area. While awarding the sentence, the court made strong observations on the nature of the crime, describing it as an act of “extreme brutality". “The manner in which the crime was committed, it was of utmost brutality, done solely on the ground of religion," the court said. Delhi’s Karkardooma court also underscored the gruesome nature of the killing, observing that “Ankit Sharma’s body was dragged like that of an animal" and describing the barbarity inflicted upon him as “nauseating and sickening." The sentencing follows the conviction of former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and the other accused for their involvement in the murder of Ankit Sharma, whose body was found in a drain amid the communal violence that swept northeast Delhi in February 2020.
The killing of the 26-year-old Intelligence Bureau staffer emerged as one of the most closely watched cases linked to the riots. The prosecution alleged that Sharma was assaulted and murdered by a mob, while Hussain maintained his innocence throughout the trial. According to the chargesheet, Sharma was attempting to calm tensions between two groups near Hussain’s residence at around 5 pm on February 25 when he was allegedly encircled by a mob. Pradeep Bhandari Reacts Reacting to the verdict, Spokesperson of BJP Pradeep Bhandari alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.
