A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and all other accused convicted in the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots to life imprisonment. While pronouncing the sentence, the court described the crime as a "very serious incident" and observed that it had shaken society.
The judge said the manner in which the entire incident unfolded forced society to introspect and reflect on the events that led to the brutal killing. The sentencing comes after the court had convicted Tahir Hussain along with the other accused for their role in the murder of Ankit Sharma, whose body was recovered from a drain during the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020.
The murder of the 26-year-old IB staffer had become one of the most high-profile cases arising out of the riots, with the prosecution alleging that Sharma was attacked and killed by a violent mob. Tahir Hussain had denied the allegations against him during the trial. With the sentencing order, all those convicted in the case will serve life imprisonment for the offence.
