(Source: Wikimedia Commons) The brother of Pakistan’s imprisoned gangster Uzair Baloch was shot and critically injured in Karachi’s Lyari area on Thursday evening, Dawn reported. In a statement, Chakiwara police said that the 40-year-old Zubair Baloch was shot and critically injured on main Chakiwara Road. Meanwhile, two passersby also suffered injuries in the shooting. They were admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi. Uzair Baloch is the chief of the defunct People’s Amn Committee. His character was played by actor Danish Pandor in the Bollywood spy-thriller film ‘Dhurandhar’, released in 2026. Speaking to Dawn, South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza said that Zubair had been arrested in seven criminal cases in 2012 and he was released in January 2025.

How The Shootout Unfolded In Lyari? According to DIG, Zubair was outside his residence in Singu Lane neighbourhood when two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire before fleeing the spot. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to his chest and abdomen, and was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery. The DIG said a passerby caught in the firing was also critically injured. Police are investigating the attack from multiple angles, including the possibility of gang rivalry and personal enmity, Raza said. Meanwhile, a local social activist, speaking to Dawn on condition of anonymity, claimed that Zubair had recently joined a political party and had begun displaying its flags in the area a few months ago. The activist also pointed to growing speculation in Lyari that several gang members who had fled to Dubai and Iran during the Karachi operation had returned after the recent US-Iran conflict, fuelling fears of a resurgence of gang violence in the locality.

According to the police, the assailants had concealed their identities by covering their faces and fled after a nearby shopkeeper opened fire in response. In March this year, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) dismissed his bail pleas in seven separate cases involving charges of murder, possession of explosives and an alleged armed attack on police personnel. The cases stem from a 2012 incident in Karachi’s Kalakot area, where Baloch and his associates are accused of attacking law enforcement officials using firearms and explosives. Earlier, in April 2020, a military court found Baloch guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 12 years’ imprisonment.
