People familiar with the visit strongly indicated that Chinese President Jinping likely to attend BRICS Summit in India as China has supported Presidency of BRICS under India leadership.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. An official announcement regarding Xi Jinping’s India visit is still awaited. India has already extended an invitation to the Chinese President for the summit. If Xi Jinping’s India visit takes place, it will be a significant and historic visit as it would be his first trip to India after the Galwan clash and the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). If the visit goes ahead as planned, it will mark Xi Jinping’s first visit to India since October 2019. His last visit was for the second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu on October 11–12, 2019. It was the second informal summit between the two leaders after the Wuhan summit. However, around six months after that visit, India-China relations hit their lowest point in six decades following the Chinese military incursions in the Ladakh sector of the LAC, leading to a prolonged military standoff.
Xi Jinping had earlier visited India on a state visit in September 2014, when he travelled to Ahmedabad and New Delhi. Since 2019, Xi has not visited India, although the two leaders have continued to meet on the sidelines of multilateral forums such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and the G20. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China last year to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on August 31–September 1, 2025. It was his first visit to China in nearly seven years. Earlier, Modi had visited China in 2018 for the Wuhan informal summit and in 2019 for the BRICS Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping last held a bilateral meeting in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, shortly after the two sides reached an understanding on resolving the military standoff along the LAC.
