Congress leader Rahul Gandhi | File photo Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday snapped at reporters outside the Parliament when they questioned him about the press conference held by the family members of the Delhi Police personnel who suffered injuries in the NEET paper leak protests at Jantar Mantar. When reporters approached Gandhi and asked him to comment on the press conference, the Congress leader retorted back, “Aap BJP se ho kya (Are you from BJP)?" The Congress leader was asked the question soon after the families of Delhi Police personnel, injured in the student protests, said that the police officials had to face sustained violence during the agitation. The family members said that many police personnel suffered injuries in the protest; however, their ordeal did not receive much public attention.

During the press conference in New Delhi, the family members screened videos which purportedly showed protesters attacking police personnel. They further alleged that anti-social elements had infiltrated the protest. Calling for justice for the injured police personnel, the family members said several officers had suffered serious injuries and are still undergoing treatment. ‘Father Almost Lynched, Helmet Shattered In Stone-Pelting’ The family members of two Delhi Police personnel injured during the student protest at Jantar Mantar recounted the violence they said their loved ones endured while on duty, alleging that the officers were attacked by an aggressive mob. The daughter of a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector, who is a student at Delhi University, alleged that her father was “almost lynched" while trying to maintain law and order near the barricades. She said he suffered serious injuries, lost consciousness and was later brought home in a blood-soaked uniform, leaving the family traumatised. Recalling the events of July 25, she said, “My father was dragged by a rowdy mob and was almost lynched near the stage at Jantar Mantar.

This happened at around 2 pm. He remained unconscious at RML Hospital for about four hours". Describing the emotional impact on the family, she added, “Around 10 pm that night, my father’s colleagues brought him home and his uniform was completely soaked in blood. Seeing him like that was extremely painful for us. That night was one of the most difficult nights our family has ever faced." Similar allegations were made by Seema, the wife of an Assistant Sub-Inspector with Delhi Police, who said her husband was among the personnel deployed at Jantar Mantar to manage the protest. She said her husband, who has served in the force for 33 years after joining as a constable, informed her that the situation had turned violent after anti-social elements allegedly entered the gathering. “He told me the crowd had become very aggressive and that anti-social elements had joined it. They attacked police personnel with flower pots, slippers, shoes, stones and whatever they could find," she alleged. She also claimed that her husband’s helmet absorbed a potentially fatal blow during the violence.
