(AFP file photo) US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that his “Board of Peace" had reached an agreement for the “complete disarmament" of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, calling it a major step towards ending the war and establishing a new Palestinian government in the territory. “Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform, calling it as a “monumental step toward lasting peace and security." Trump said the agreement would be implemented in phases, with Israeli forces gradually withdrawing as disarmament progresses.
He added that an International Stabilisation Force would work with a new Palestinian police force to oversee security in Gaza. Hamas Officials Confirm Deal Following Trump’s announcement, senior Hamas officials said the group had reached an agreement with Israel covering key issues, including weapons and the withdrawal of Israeli forces, according to AFP. “An agreement has been reached regarding the issue of weapons," a Hamas official told AFP, adding that there was also an understanding on a “gradual withdrawal" of Israeli forces from Gaza. The official said Hamas expected mediators and the Board of Peace to ensure Israel follows the terms of the agreement. The issue of Hamas’s disarmament has been one of the biggest obstacles in advancing the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Under Trump’s 20-point peace plan, the next phase includes Hamas disarmament and a gradual Israeli military pullback. Gaza Talks To Continue Trump thanked mediators Egypt, Qatar and Turkey for their role, saying the agreement would help Gaza move towards governance under a new Palestinian administration.
“At the same time, Israel will have the security it deserves," Trump said, adding that Gaza should no longer be used as a base for attacks. “One year ago there was a violent raging war, humanitarian crisis and hostages kept in brutal captivity. We have made historic progress and there is still much work to do," he added. A meeting of Gaza ceasefire mediators, including the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, is expected to take place soon in Cairo to discuss implementation of the next phase of the ceasefire plan, Egyptian state-linked media reported. Despite the ceasefire, violence has continued in Gaza. Health officials said Israeli strikes on Thursday killed at least four people, including two children.
