(Image source: Reuters) US President Donald Trump has grown increasingly frustrated as the war in Iran enters its sixth month, with an NBC News report on Wednesday claiming he recently lashed out at senior national security officials amid widening divisions within his administration over how best to move forward.
Citing a US official and others familiar with the matter, the NBC report describes a deeply divided White House. “After all this time, there is no unity," one official was quoted saying. According to NBC News, Trump expressed anger during a meeting with top security officials last week over the lack of progress in Iran, reportedly using expletives. Officials remain split on key priorities, whether to focus on curbing Iran’s nuclear programme, safeguarding shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, or weakening Tehran’s missile and drone capabilities. One official warned that while the administration has secured “a series of tactical victories," it risks a “strategic defeat" in the absence of clear policy direction or a defined end goal.
A person close to Trump said the president has also been discouraged by Iran’s unwillingness to agree to a deal. “The president is exasperated," the ally said, adding that Trump may have underestimated the difficulty of negotiations and lacked a clear long-term strategy. “He did not intend this to be a prolonged conflict," the quoted person said. However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt pushed back against claims that Trump lost his temper. “This is false. The president has a great team whom he trusts, and everyone on the team knows he’s the final decision-maker," she told NBC News. She added that the administration would continue its hardline stance, saying Trump would not relent as long as Iran “breaks the MOU, kills our soldiers, and targets our ships in the strait," asserting that he remains determined to keep up pressure on Tehran.
