In a statement on May 29, the IMD acknowledged the rain was unlikely to reach Keralam within the four-day window of its forecasted date of May 26. The ‘normal’ date for the monsoon’s arrival in the southern State was initially set for June 1.
IMD scientist Neetha K Gopal said: “The conditions for the onset of monsoon are getting ready, so we can declare it on 4th June. Last year, the monsoon arrived in Keralam on May 24, marking its earliest arrival since 2009, according to a report by The Hindu. Less Monsoon This Year? According to the IMD, the 2026 southwest monsoon will bring only about 90 per cent of normal rainfall, which is classified as “below normal." The MeT Department highlighted that one reason behind the weak Indian monsoon could be a developing El Nino in the Pacific ocean — a condition defined by the periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which typically lasts between nine and 12 months. The monsoon acts as a lifeline for Indian farmers who rely heavily on the rainfall to sow rice, pulses, and other essential seasonal crops.
