(AFP file photo) Indian nationals will no longer need an airport transit visa when travelling through Germany to another country, the German Embassy in New Delhi said on Tuesday. The decision was published in the Federal Law Gazette and will come into effect from June 3 (Wednesday). “This implements a result of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trip to India in January of this year," the German Embassy release stated.
Indian nationals will no longer require a transit visa when travelling to another country with a layover at a German airport. Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited India earlier in January. It was his first official visit to the country and his first trip to Asia as Chancellor. “It underlines the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening German Indian relations, facilitating the movement of people, and further strengthening economic ties," it added. Until now, Indian passengers transiting through German airports were required to hold a special airport transit visa in certain cases.
The new rule removes this requirement, making layovers in Germany easier for Indian travellers heading to third countries. What Has Changed? Under the new rule, Indian nationals transiting through German international airports no longer require a Type A Schengen Airport Transit visa, provided they are travelling onward to a non-Schengen destination. This applies to key aviation hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich – two of Europe’s busiest and best-connected airports. The announcement first followed Merz’s first official visit to India, where mobility and people-to-people exchanges featured prominently alongside discussions on trade, defence, and technology. The visa-free transit facility emerged as a practical outcome of these wider bilateral talks.
