Assam's flood toll rose to 80 on Thursday after two more people died, while the number of affected people fell to a little over 2.12 lakh in four districts, according to an official bulletin. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said the flood situation improved from Wednesday, when more than three lakh people were affected across the same four districts. Both deaths were reported from Sivasagar district, where a boy was among the two people who drowned in floodwaters. With these deaths, the number of people killed in this year's floods has climbed to 80. The ASDMA's daily flood report said more than 2,12,400 people were affected in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar districts. Charaideo was the worst-hit, with nearly 80,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with 71,000 and Jorhat with 40,000. ADMINISTRATION RUNNING CAMPS The administration has been running 112 relief camps and relief distribution centres in the four districts and is currently looking after 75,583 affected people, the bulletin said.
It added that the Army, NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Service, police and civil agencies have rescued many people from different parts of Upper Assam. In the last 24 hours, authorities distributed 918.55 quintals of rice, 203.9 quintals of dal, 146.7 quintals of salt and 17,546.4 litres of mustard oil among flood-hit people. The ASDMA said 437 villages are still under water and 17,198.09 hectares of crop area have been damaged across the state. Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in different districts.
The Dhansiri river was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh, while 2,97,384 domestic animals and poultry have also been affected across Assam. Overall, the flood situation has eased from the previous day, but large-scale damage and disruption continue in the affected districts. Ends
