A controversy has erupted following Hockey India's decision to replace the traditional blue jersey with a saffron primary jersey for the men's and women's national teams ahead of the FIH Hockey World Cup. Hockey India stated that the change was based on feedback from players and coaches regarding visibility issues against the blue turf, adding that saffron symbolizes courage and sacrifice. Critics and former players expressed dissatisfaction, highlighting that blue has long defined India's sporting identity and questioning the necessity of a complete color change.
Senior sports journalist Sharda Ugra and former players noted that orange has been used as an alternate color previously, but raised concerns over the decision-making process. The issue has also drawn political reactions, with opposition figures alleging an attempt to alter national sporting symbols, while the BJP denied the claims, accusing opponents of politicising the color. Panelists during the debate also highlighted critical unresolved issues in Indian hockey, including performance dips and unaddressed allegations.
