The Public Education Protection Committee and the Mysuru district unit of AIDSO have criticised the State government for the delay in providing basic facilities to students in government and aided schools, and demanded the immediate appointment of a State Education Minister. In a press statement issued on Thursday, the organisations said that although schools have been functioning for nearly two months, several essential facilities are yet to reach students.
They alleged that shoes and socks have not been distributed so far, while notebooks, which the government had decided to provide to all students in government and aided schools from the current academic year, have also not reached schools. The organisations also claimed that the amount sanctioned by the government for supplying eggs and bananas under the school nutrition programme is lower than prevailing market prices, forcing teachers to pay the additional cost from their own pockets.
Condemning what they termed the government’s neglect of public education, particularly government schools attended largely by children of poor farmers and labourers, the organisations said the State is yet to have an Education Minister to address these issues. AIDSO urged the Congress government and the Chief Minister to immediately appoint an Education Minister and ensure that all essential facilities are provided to students without further delay, demanded Rajanna, District president of the Public Education Protection Committee, and Chandrakala, District president of AIDSO, Mysuru.
