District Crime Branch Superintendent of Police (SP) Firoz M. Shafiq has urged young people to avoid becoming dependent on social media and remain cautious against online traps. He was speaking after inaugurating a programme organised by the Victims Information, Sensitisation, Welfare and Assistance Society (VISWAS) at Bharathamatha CMI Public School here on Thursday as part of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
Shafiq said cases of people, especially youngsters, being lured through attractive offers and false promises on social media platforms were increasing. He advised the youth to stay vigilant and protect themselves from such attempts. The event was organised as part of the United Nations observance of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
The day is observed on July 30 to create awareness about human trafficking and extend support to victims and survivors. P. Premnath, Viswas secretary general and Union Ministry of Home Affairs master trainer on anti-human trafficking, delivered the keynote address. Fr. V.D. Francis Xavier, host school Principal, presided over the function.
Viswas members M.P. Sukumaran, M. Devadas, N. Rakhi, Deepa Jayaprakash and Sindhu S. Nair spoke.
