The licence covers a 207.6 sq. km area across Balotra and Jodhpur districts, where geological studies indicate the presence of valuable rare earth elements such as Lanthanum, Cerium, Praseodymium, and Neodymium.

Rare Earth Elements are considered critical minerals because they are essential for manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy technologies, defence equipment, semiconductors, electronics, aerospace systems, and telecommunications infrastructure. The exploration, awarded to Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Ltd. (CMPDI), is expected to generate detailed geological data, attract investment in India's critical minerals sector, strengthen domestic supply chains, and reduce long-term dependence on imports.
