The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association’s (KGMOA) district committee has strongly condemned the incident at Attingal taluk hospital on Wednesday (July 29, 2026), wherein the duty doctor in the emergency wing was allegedly obstructed from performing his official duties by the Attingal municipal chairperson. The KGMOA said that the doctor had been examining a 15-year-old girl who had come with her mother, complaining of assault.
As the case was classified as a medico-legal case (MLC), the doctor was collecting the information required to notify the police in accordance with legal procedures. However, the KGMOA alleged that during the course of these procedures, the municipal chairperson unnecessarily intervened in the functioning of the emergency department, obstructed the doctor’s official duties, and issued him death threats.
Demanding a comprehensive investigation into the incident, the KGMOA said that ensuring a safe working environment for health-care professionals is the responsibility of the government. IMA’s reaction The Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) Chirayinkeezhu unit has also condemned the incident and pointed out that threatening a doctor who was discharging official and lawful duties and disrupting the functioning of the hospital constitute a serious challenge to the health-care system.
It has demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and legal action against the offenders under the Hospital Protection Act. The IMA also called upon the authorities to fulfil their responsibility of providing a safe working environment for health-care professionals.
