In yet another tree-fall incident, a 58-year-old government school teacher suffered severe injuries after a fully grown tree fell on him on Wednesday near Attiguppe in west Bengaluru. The victim, Balaji T., is a teacher at a government school in Bengaluru South district. He was on his scooter near Attiguppe Metro Station at around 1.30 p.m., talking to one of his students, when the tree fell on him.
The student also sustained minor injuries and has since been discharged from hospital. Balaji, however, has suffered injuries to both legs, and there is also a possibility of damage to his spinal cord, according to a senior Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) official. G.K. Sudarshan, Deputy Conservator of Forests, told The Hindu that the tree, Spathodea campanulata, was in good health and had been pruned.
The GBA is yet to ascertain the reason for the fall. Sudarshan said the GBA will support the family with the medical expenses. Balaji is scheduled to undergo two surgeries on Thursday night or Friday morning, according to sources. This is the third such incident in the last 40 days that has left citizens injured. In the last week of June, a man and a woman sitting in B.M. Kaval Park in east Bengaluru’s Indiranagar were injured after a tree branch snapped and fell on them.
One suffered head injuries, while the other sustained severe back injuries. Both are currently hospitalised. Just days before that incident, a 52-year-old man slipped into a coma after a tree branch snapped and fell on him, causing severe head injuries.
