In an interview with India Today, former Karnataka Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Jagadish Shettar addressed the ongoing Mekedatu project and river water sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu. Shettar asserted that constructing the Mekedatu project is Karnataka's right as it is being built on state land primarily for Bengaluru's drinking water needs.
He stated that the project will not harm Tamil Nadu's interests and noted that Karnataka would be in a position to supply water during distress periods. Emphasizing that inter-state river disputes should not be emotionalized, Shettar called for factual discussion and dialogue between both states to achieve consensus, highlighting that approaching tribunals and courts should be a last resort.
