I(mage/Instagram) The Centre has summoned senior executives of Meta for a second time after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post was briefly restricted by the social media platform, with the government seeking both a policy-level and technical explanation for the incident. The development comes days after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned Meta’s public policy leadership over the removal of a July 23 post in which PM Modi addressed India’s youth and promised stringent action against exam paper leaks. Speaking on the sidelines of a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conference on semiconductors, Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the government has asked Meta to send representatives at the highest level to explain what led to the episode. “We have asked Meta to come in at the highest level and explain what is happening," Krishnan said.

He added that the government wants both a policy-level and technical understanding of the issue and plans to raise several concerns with the company during the meeting, which is expected to take place within a week. “They will be coming and explaining what the situation is. We want to have both a policy-level and a technical understanding of the issues, and an adaptation to the kinds of concerns India has in this regard. There are several issues we have, which we will raise with them when they come," Krishnan said. Meta Introduces Additional Oversight for Prominent Accounts According to government sources, Meta has informed MeitY that it has implemented enhanced safeguards for content posted by Prime Minister Modi and other prominent accounts following the incident. The company reportedly told the ministry that posts from such accounts will now be subject to additional oversight, including multiple layers of review involving senior officials. Sources said any decision involving these accounts will undergo rigorous checks and require review by at least two senior company officials before action is taken. Krishnan said Meta had informed the government that new protocols relating to prominent accounts were introduced on July 28 to prevent a recurrence.
