The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) on Thursday held a high-level coordination meeting with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to strengthen measures aimed at tackling telecom-enabled cybercrime, with a focus on improving coordination between telecom service providers and law enforcement agencies. The meeting was chaired by Shikha Goel, Director of the TGCSB, and attended by K. Raja Sekhar, Deputy Director General (Technology), Department of Telecommunications, Hemant Rathwe, Deputy Director General (Security), Department of Telecommunications, senior officials from the Intelligence Bureau, telecom service providers and TGCSB.

According to the TGCSB, the discussions focused on addressing emerging cyber threats facilitated through telecom infrastructure and enhancing mechanisms for cybercrime prevention, investigation and victim protection. Among the key issues discussed were measures to detect and curb the misuse of SIM boxes and other illegal telecom infrastructure used in cyber frauds, strengthening verification mechanisms for suspicious mobile numbers linked to cybercrime complaints, tightening SIM card issuance norms and improving safeguards against the misuse of multiple SIM cards. The participants also discussed consumer protection measures, including timely alerts for suspected fraudulent mobile numbers and faster action against numbers used in cyber frauds.

Deliberations were also held on tackling international spoofed calls, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)-based frauds and telecom identity masking through technical interventions. The meeting further explored ways to strengthen mechanisms for the timely sharing and blocking of malicious URLs and phishing links, besides enhancing oversight of Point of Sale (PoS) outlets to detect abnormal SIM issuance patterns and prevent misuse. The TGCSB said the participants emphasised the need for closer coordination between the Department of Telecommunications, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), telecom service providers, internet service providers and law enforcement agencies to improve cybercrime investigations and strengthen citizen safety.

The bureau reiterated its commitment to leveraging technology, enhancing inter-agency collaboration and adopting proactive measures to combat emerging cyber threats and protect citizens from telecom-enabled cyber frauds.
