Shivamogga Member of Parliament B.Y. Raghavendra has written to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, appealing him to extend the deadline for farmers to pay premiums under the weather-based crop insurance scheme. In a letter dated July 30, Mr. Raghavendra said the State had recorded an average rainfall deficit of 34% this monsoon, while Shivamogga district alone had a deficit of 44%.
Under the weather-based insurance scheme, the government had included horticultural crops such as areca, pepper, ginger, and mango, with the premium payment deadline set for July 31. However, many farmers could not pay the premium within the deadline owing to financial constraints.
Earlier, farmers had the option of paying the premium through Common Service Centres. This time, however, they were required to pay only through cooperative societies or banks, and many could not complete the payment because of server and other technical problems.
Keeping farmers’ interests in mind, Mr. Raghavendra urged the Chief Minister to extend the deadline for premium payment.
