In an interview with India Today, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Praveen Chakraverti addressed the escalating Mekedatu dam controversy and Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Clarifying statements regarding the central government's response in parliament, Chakraverti emphasized that per the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment, any dam construction remains conditional on Cauvery tribunal directives and consent from lower riparian states.
While acknowledging Karnataka's severe water shortage due to a weak monsoon, he stressed that farmers in Tamil Nadu's Cauvery Delta are critically dependent on water releases. He asserted that the Tamil Nadu Congress unequivocally opposes the construction of the Mekedatu dam while demanding the immediate release of four TMC feet of water as directed by the Cauvery Water Management Committee.
Chakraverti also expressed optimism about direct talks between the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to resolve the long-standing inter-state dispute.
