YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday alleged that the Chandrababu Naidu government had been harassing all the YSRCP leaders by foisting false police cases. He met the party leader and former Minister Seediri Appalaraju in Srikakulam District Jail at Ampolu. Appala Raju was arrested on July 22 for allegedly misleading investigating officers and tampering with evidence in a hit-and-run case involving his son. On July 10, a 45-year-old man, Danayya, died on the spot after a two-wheeler allegedly ridden by the Minister’s son hit him on the Old Highway at Kasibugga in Srikakulam district.
Jagan Mohan Reddy vowed to extend legal support for the quick release of Mr. Appalaraju. On reaching the jail, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy was not allowed to meet Mr. Appalaraju as he was about three hours behind schedule. But after a heated exchange with the authorities concerned, he was allowed. During the Mulakat, Mr. Appala Raju told Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy that TDP leaders had ‘put pressure on the police to defame and harass’ his family members despite his cooperation for the inquiry. Later, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy told the media that the YSRCP would take every step for the protection of Mr. Appalaraju.
“The Chandrababu Naidu government has been harassing Mr. Appala Raju with an intention to destroy his political career,” Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said and questioned whether such cases were filed against the TDP leaders when their family members were involved in road accident cases. “The government has created a bad precedent of filing cases against the parents when their children are involved in accident cases,” he said. Earlier, former Ministers Dharmana Prasada Rao, Dharmana Krishnadas, Opposition leader of A.P. Legislative Council Botcha Satyanarayanna and others welcomed Mr. Jagan and accompanied him to the jail.
They also exchanged heated arguments with the police, accusing the latter of imposing ‘unprecedented restrictions’ on Mr.Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tour. Alleging that there was a mild lathicharge at the District Jail, the YSRCP leaders condemned the police action. However, Sub-inspector Pravallika alleged that the YSRCP leaders prevented the police from discharging their duties. The former Chief Minister had interacted with the YSRCP leaders at Bhogapuram, Natavalasa, Pusapatirega, Ranasthalam, Etcherla and Srikakulam before reaching the Srikakulam District Jail.
