The AIADMK has nominated two leading dissidents, Thondamuthur MLA S.P. Velumani and former Minister P. Thangamani, to attend events in Erode and Salem districts on August 3, 2026 to mark the death anniversary of ‘Dheeran’ Chinnamalai, a freedom fighter who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries CE. According to a release issued by the party on Thursday (July 30), Mr. Velumani, one of the deputy general secretaries, has been named first in the list of those who will garland the statue of the freedom fighter at a memorial in Odanilai near Arachalur in Erode.
The release mentioned the names of 15 other functionaries of the party. Thangamani, one of the organisation secretaries of the party, will take part in a similar event at the Sankari Fort in Salem where Chinnamalai was hanged in 1805 CE for having resisted the British rule. Four other office bearers of the party have been named for this event. The party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami will garland the statue of Chinnmalai at Guindy, Chennai, on the same day.
Removal from party posts in May Both Mr. Velumani and Mr. Thangamani, who were district secretaries of the Coimbatore (Suburban - south) and Namakkal units until mid-May, were removed from their posts after their revolt against Mr. Palaniswami. Velumani was one of the 25 legislators who voted in favour of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) regime during the trust motion in the Assembly. He and Mr. Thangamani were given different positions a month later.
They wrote to Mr. Palaniswami in late June, expressing their inability to take up the assignments. Subsequently, they stayed away from the party’s discussions to review the performance of the organisation in the Assembly poll.
