The Maharashtra government has announced a comprehensive crackdown on junk food across all schools in the state, prohibiting its sale, promotion, and availability within school campuses and inside a 50-meter radius. Issued by the Food and Drug Administration, the order applies to government, private, aided, CBSE, ICSE, state board, and residential schools. Banned items include chips, soft drinks, colas, fried snacks, chocolates, ice creams, and vada pav.
The initiative aims to combat rising childhood obesity, nutrient deficiencies, and health issues that hinder learning capacity. Schools are required to appoint a food safety supervisor and a health and wellness nodal officer, while inspectors will conduct annual checks. Non-compliance could result in actions against vendors' food licenses. The government urges schools to encourage healthier options like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, and milk.
However, implementation, affordability, and replacing junk food with clean, nutritious alternatives remain key challenges.
