Under the new directive, the sale, free distribution, and of foods high in fat, trans-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) are prohibited within school premises and a 50-metre radius. Popular items such as vada pav, burgers, samosas, chips, cold drinks, sugary beverages, chocolates, and ice cream are covered under the ban.
The order applies to all government and private schools across Maharashtra and is expected to impact more than 2 crore students. The FDA has also made food safety licences mandatory for all school canteens, and only licensed vendors will be allowed to operate.
